You need 75w90 gear oil and a bottle of friction modifier. You can get both at Partsource or your local Ford dealership. Or if you have it availableto you, my favorite is to use Redline 75w90NS It is a synthetic from Redline oil and doesnt require you to add friction modifier. AWESOME STUFF

Yep. Tip: never pop the dif cover when you're under it. Imagine getting that shit out of your hair. Live and learn.

If you leave the friction modifier out, the posi will be tighter. Sorry if this advice is a little late.

How do you know when you need to replace the gasket?? Just basically leaking or what? Mine leaks a little but its not like a constant drip or anything.

Well, the old cover was all bent up on the bottom from a bad jack I used, and it was leaking pretty bad.

I put on a Mac rear girdle as well, it was a bit of a pain to get in there with the sway bar on. Just had to have a buddy lift up on the back bumper to take some slack off the suspension and it went in good.

It looks pretty good now too. I think I am going to have the car undercoated for before winter hits.

yeah i would like to know too as i'm doing my gears and wonder if it will "bite better" without the modifier or should i put it in?

I don't think it wears the diff out any faster, but maybe the clutches won't last as long. It will definitely bite better without it. Also, if you are rebuilding the diff, you can change the order of the clutches and insert an extra steel (I'm pretty sure it's an extra steel) to make it tighter. You should be able to find some comprehensive instructions on this modification by doing a web search or a search of Stangnet or the Corral.

and if you do get your hair covered in it, dish soap works really good getting it out.

The clutch pack modification is to pick the 2 best friction plates from the existing ones. Then with the new rebuild kit, you put the plates back in Friction-Steel-Friction-Steel and so on. I did this when I rebuilt my diff 2 years ago. The trac-loc definately feels better than it in other Ford's I have driven. Also if you run a good quality synthetic gear oil you don't need the friction moddifier.

I got mine at Pro Trac Gear, best price I could find at the time. I also had no problems returning them when I did not need them, I also got the bearings and seals from them too. The packs of shims came with a bunch of various sizes.
